The Discovery of Alaska by Russian Explorers Celebrated in Russia and US

15.07.2010

For the 269th anniversary of the opening of “Russian America” is being celebrated. On the morning of July 15 a service was held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Listi (Moscow) in honor of the first Russian sailor-explorers to arrive in Alaska, president of the Russian America society Vladimir Kolychev told Russkiy Mir.

On this day in 1741 the ship St. Pavel commanded by Alexei Chirikov first arrived on the Alaskan coast. A day and a half later the ship St. Peter commanded by Vitus Bering also reached the Alaskan coast. Their arrival led to the establishment of Russian outposts and settlements in what was then called Russian America and later Alaska.

Later in the day a service was held at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Archangel Michael in Sitka, Alaska (formerly known as Novoarkhangelsk, the capital of Russian America).
