Exhibition of Russian Operatic Costumes Opens in Moulins, France

02.02.2010

Exhibition of costumes used in Russian opera performances was unveiled in the French town of Moulins, reports the Kultura TV Channel.

The exhibition features 130 costumes used in the productions of major operas in such cities as St. Petersburg, Moscow and Paris in the late 19th - early 21st centuries. The National Library of France and the New National Museum of Monaco have also provided a number of exhibits.

The exposition consists of two sections. One section contains magnificent attire of kings and boyars, adorned with gold embroidery and furs. The other section displays the simple clothing, yet very bright and covered with intricate patterns, worn by the peasants and ordinary city dwellers. All these costumes were used in the ballets performed by Sergey Diaghilev's troupe, with many of these being created in the late 19th century, by tailors and costume designers for the original stage performances in the Mariinskiy Theater.
