Winners of Yuri Bashmet International Viola Competition to Play in Moscow

Alexander Akimov of Russia and Peizhun Xu of China became the winners of The Sixth International Viola Competition. The results were announced on January 31 in Moscow. The second prize was granted to Irina Sopova (Russia) and Elias Goldstein (USA), and the third – to Armen Nazaryan (Russia).

Graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, Alexander Akimov is the soloist of the Russian National Orchestra. He took the second prize at Moscow International Viola Competition in 2006. Peizhun Xu graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory; she is a laureate of famous international competitions.

Yuri Bashmet International Viola Competition has won international acknowledgement. According to critics, it stands out from similar events by talented participants, a sophisticated program and a jury formed from the most prominent  Russian and foreign musicians in the field of chamber music. This year its participants represent ten countries, including Russia, the USA, Canada, Israel, Ukraine, China and France. Specifics of the competition rests with the composition of its jury – a music expert, a composer, a conductor etc. provide a thorough evaluation of contestants’ professionalism.
