Minister of Culture: Chekhov Has Greatly Influenced the Way Russia Perceives the World

Prominent theater directors, actors and politicians from 30 countries have gathered in Moscow for an International Chekhov Conference entitled A Word about Chekhov. The event marks the 150th anniversary of the famous Russian writer and dramatist Anton Chekhov.

Opening the event, Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev pointed out the enormous influence of Chekhov’s heritage on the world literature and culture. Over 80 theatres worldwide have staged his play The Seagull, whilst The Cherry Orchard has survived about 50 stagings.

Among guests of the conference were German film directors Peter Stein and Frank Kastorf, their French colleague Jacques Lassalle; Pyotr Fomenko, Oleg Tabakov and Mark Zakharov of Russia, and many others.

According to Russia’s Minister of Culture  Alexander Avdeev , this year is the year of “the genius of  Russian culture who  influenced the whole world”.
