Celebration of Chekhov’s Anniversary Kicks off in His Hometown

29.01.2010

January 29 marks the 150th anniversary of the outstanding Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. A major celebration of this event will take part in the writer’s hometown Taganrog and will be attended by President Dmitry Medvedev, reports ITAR-TASS.

Taganrog has been protecting all memorial sites related to the years of Chekhov’s childhood, adolescence and youth. First of all, it is the oldest Gymnasium where the Russian writer spent 11 school years and which is now a literature museum named after him. Two days ago a monument to Chekhov’s Man in the Shell was unveiled in Taganrog.

In Taganrog celebrations will continue through the year. An opening of the 4th Chekhov Book Festival is scheduled for May, an international conference - for June, and a theater festival – for October.
