First Russian Room Opens in Egypt

02.03.2010

February 25 marked the opening of the Russian Room in Hurghada. As it has already been reported, in early February the foundation donated books to the new language center’s library at the 42nd Cairo International Book Fair.

It is the first Russian language center of the kind not only in Egypt, but also in the whole region. The opening ceremony was attended by Director of the Russian Scientific and Cultural Center in Cairo A. Balenko, Director of Mubarak City Library Ms. Asmaa etc.

Director of the center for extra-curriculum education Russkiy Dom Elena Chernikova briefed the first visitors of the Russian Room on its future activities and schedule, and told about encyclopedias, the Russian language study aids and fiction books contained in the center’s library. Elena Chernikova said she hoped that the newly opened education facility would develop into a cultural life center for the local Russian Diaspora, and that it would promote the Russian language and culture among the local population. As part of this goal, the center will offer Russian language lessons, will organize meetings with interesting people and lectures on the Russian art and culture etc.

Director of Mubarak City Library Ms. Asmaa suggested that the new center and the library conduct joint events for children of various nationalities.

Visitors of the Russian Room highly appreciated its library, which contains quite rare books. Thanks to support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation the local Russian Diaspora, students of local Russian schools and all people interested the Russian language will be able to read the best Russian books, and to get familiar with the Russian culture.
