Ninth Russophonie Award Presented in French Capital

05.02.2015

On Saturday, January 31, 2015, in Pantheon Square in Paris, as part of the VI Days of Russian Book and Russian Literatures, the jury presented the ninth in a row Russophonie Award to Hélène Sinany for her translation of The Persian by Alexander Ilichevsky (Le Persan, Paris, Gallimard, 2014).

The winner Hélène Sinany taught at Sorbonne University in Paris and later worked as a translator in the UN translations department in New York. The rich experience she gained in technical and academic translation helped her a lot in working on The Persian.

The award was presented to the winner at a special ceremony organized during the Days of Russian Book and Russian Literatures. In addition to the monetary award, the translator was also presented a memory sculpture of Victor Kryuchkov.

In their remarks jury members Evgueni Bounimovitch, Agnès Desarthe, Gérard Conio, Françoise Genevray and Irène Sokologorsky noted that the ninth year of the Russophonie Award was not only notable for an abundance of translations – 41 works during the past year – by also by their quality.

Instituted in 2006 at the initiative of the President Boris Yeltsin’s Foundation and the France – Urals Association, the Russophonie Award is presented for the best literary translation from Russian to French, regardless of the author and publisher’s national origin.

Russophonie is sponsored by Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center (Russia), Russkiy Mir Foundation (Russia), Russian Center of Science and Culture (France), National Book Center – CNL (France) and the regional directorate for cultural affairs of the Paris Region – DRAC IDF (France).
