Literary-Musical Night “On the Livonian Side…”

06.02.2015

On January 30, 2015 Riga hosted the literary night “On the Livonian Side…” from the “200 Years of Russian Poetry in Latvia” series, conducted under supervision of the Baltic Poets Guild with financial support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation.

The night was devoted to well-known Russian poets of the late 17th to mid-19th centuries, who were somehow connected with Latvia during their lifetime. The audience heard poems, recollections and fragments from the bios of Denis Fonvizin, Konstantin Batyushkov, Vasily Zhukovsky, Nikolai Karamzin, Ivan Krylov and Wilhelm Kuechelbecker. Poems were recited by Riga-based poets Yuri Kasyanich, Alexandra Bandurina, Roman Navarro and Sergey Pichugin. Biographic references were presented by historian and bibliographer Anatoly Rakityansky.

In recounting the poetry of Pushkin’s era it was impossible not to include some of the great poet’s verses in the poetry night, although Pushkin had no direct links to Latvia. Pushkin’s poems were recited by actor of the Mikhail Chekhov Russian Theatre in Riga Leonid Lents and chair of Pushkin’s Society in Latvia Svetlana Vidyakina.

The musical background was provided by soloists of the International Talent Centre, led by Galina Poltorak.
