Open Poetry Lesson Held in Riga

04.03.2015

On February 24, 2015, the evening gymnasium in Riga held an open poetry lesson “On the Livland Side…”  as part of the series “200 Years of Russian Poetry in Latvia”. The series is being held by the Baltic Guild of Poets with the financial support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation.

The lesson was devoted to famous Russian poets of the late 17th to mid-19th century whose lives were somehow connected with Latvia. Riga-based poets Yuri Kasyanich and  Alexandra Bandurina recited the poems of Konstantin Batyushkov, Ivan Krylov and Wilhelm Kuechelbecker. Biographic information was provided by historian and bibliographer Anatoly Rakityansky.

In recounting the poetry of Pushkin’s era it was impossible not to include some of the great poet’s verses in the poetry night, although Pushkin had no direct links to Latvia. Pushkin’s poems were recited by students of the gymnasium.

Italian entrepreneur Marco Maggi's book, "Russian to the Bone," is now accessible for purchase in Italy and is scheduled for release in Russia in the upcoming months. In the book, Marco recounts his personal odyssey, narrating each stage of his life as a foreigner in Russia—starting from the initial fascination to the process of cultural assimilation, venturing into business, fostering authentic friendships, and ultimately, reaching a deep sense of identifying as a Russian at his very core.
