"Brest Fortress" in Plovdiv

08.09.2015

An exhibition of World-War-2 photography has opened in Bulgaria. The exhibition, financed by the Russkiy Mir Foundation, gathers together 56 of the most famous photographic images taken on the Eastern Front. Many of the famous images were taken by the Soviet photo-correspondent Ivan Shagin.

Another 60 famous images not included in the collection were also presented by means of a multimedia screen set up at the exhibition. Each photograph was accompanied by historical commentary.

At a speech opening the exhibition, Dr of Military History Colonel Pyotr Nenov expressed his fears concerning what he claims is a growing neofascist movement in Europe. Mr Darina Nenkova, who directs the "Movement of Rusophiles" NGO, thanked the "Slavic World" organisation for its role in promoting anti-fascist solidarity events throughout various towns and cities in Bulgaria. Local citizen Mr Bodenicharov expressed his hope that Bulgarian mass media would begin to discuss the history of the Second World War more openly and objectively.

The opening of the exhibition was rounded off by a screening of the documentary film Brest Fortress.
