Afanasy Fet's Poems Recited in Estonia

07.12.2015

Afanasy FetOn 4 December 2015, Russian culture enthusiasts gathered at the grand hall of the Pärnu Central Library to learn about Afanasy Fet and read his poems.

The evening of music and literature was part of the series on the history of Russian culture. Afanasy Fet’s writings are mainly dedicated to love and nature, and his talent thrived when he wrote on those topics. His poetry remains relevant and popular to this day.

The poet’s youth is connected to Estonia. His parents sent him to a boarding house in the town of Võru. There, young Fet started writing poems and studying classical philology.

Afanasy Fet had a hard life. He used to say, “My life is a most difficult novel.” In the course of the event, visitors flipped through the ‘most difficult novel’ on the life and works of the poet who suffered from ‘the cruelest moral torture’ that made him a cynic.

Sergei Cherkasov, an actor at the Russian Theater of Estonia, recited poems and performed songs adapted from Afanasy Fet’s works.

The evenings of music and literature from the History of Russian Arts course are organized by the Järeletaitaja educational center (Pärnu, Estonia) as part of the School of Russian Language and Culture project with the support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation and the Central Library of Pärnu.
