London’s annual ‘Russian Ballet Icons’ Gala took place in the British capital. It was devoted to the memory of renowned ballet impresario and patron Sergey Diagilev. At the beginning of the 20th century he founded Ballets Russes that brought on stage impressing amount of great ballet dancers and choreographers.
Star performers from all around the world participated in this remarkable event at the London Coliseum. Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres, Vaganova ballet, La Scala, The Royal ballet brought their best leads such as Maria Alexandrovna, Davide Dato, Zenaida Yanowsky, Dmitry Gudanov, Marlon Dino, Svetlana Lunkina, Lucia Lacarra, and many others.
Much-loved favorites of Diaghilev such as The Firebird, The Scheherazade, Le Spectre de la Rose, Petrushka were followed by works of contemporary choreographers, such as David Dawson, Alastair Marriott, Gerald Arpino, Jean-Christophe Maillot.
Maria Alexandrovna who was a prima ballerina of the Bolshoi theater until recently, commented that Ballets Russes is the necessary base for any contemporary dancer who wants to fully open his potential. She is sure that Diagilev has paved the way for the future development of the ballet for the future generations. “During the most complicated period of Revolution, rich culture traditions were brought up in Russia,” said Alexandrova.
