Russian Parliament members criticize new Ukrainian law About Education

28.09.2017

Federation Council websiteRussian parliament members have criticized new Ukrainian law About Education, RIA Novosti informs.

Federation Council members believe that it violates rights of national minorities and children. Senators are sure that international organizations such as United Nations, OSCE and European parliaments should condemn this document too. They think it contradicts principles of democracy.

State Duma Deputies have stated that everything possible should be done to protect Ukrainian citizens against discrimination. The document states that this law is an act of ethnocide of Russian people to Ukraine. Deputies have stressed that new norms trample on the key UN and European Council standards about protection of language individuality of northern minorities, stipulated in the international contracts, validated by Ukraine.

It is worth reminding that today Petro Poroshenko has approved of the draft law "On Education." This law practically bans teaching on any language but the Ukrainian. According to this document, children will be able to study languages of national minorities including Russian only in initial grades. Starting the fifth grade, all subjects of the school programme will be taught in Ukrainian only. This is the norm until 2020, and then Russian together with other languages will be excluded from the school curriculum at all.

New law has been already criticized by Warsaw, Budapest, Bucharest and Kishinev.

According to Russian diplomats, Ukrainian parliament members chose their main task to be stronger infringement of interests of millions Russian-speaking citizens in Ukraine, forced establishment of mono-ethnic language regime in the multinational country.
