Lisbon provides cathedral in the city center to Russian Orthodox Church

Flickr/Kristina SavicA cathedral building in the center of Lisbon was passed on to the Orthodox community, as a result of the trip of Bishop Nestor of Korsun around Portugal, according to the official website of Moscow Patriarchate. The agreement states that the construction is provided for free and for a long-term perspective.

The cathedral building is located in prestigious quarter Lapa at the coast. After the agreement was signed, Bishop Nestor of Korsun performed the ceremony of sanctifying the water.

At present there are about five thousand Russian compatriots living in Portugal. The first Orthodox communities subordinated to the Russian Orthodox Church appeared at the end of 60s of the last century in Portugal. The first Russian Orthodox Church of All Saints was erected in Lisbon by means of Moscow Patriarchate at the beginning of 2000s. Several other Orthodox temples emerged in the country since that time.
