Mosaic at the largest Orthodox Cathedral in Serbia, has been unveiled today on February 22 in Belgrade, RIA Novosti reports. The Ascension of Christ mosaic is one of the largest projects of curvilinear mosaic decoration. Its total square reaches almost 1250 square meters. Several dozens of artists from Russia and Serbia worked over its composition in Orthodox Cathedral of St. Savva. People’s artist of the Russian Federation Nikolai Mukhin is an author of the project. The mosaic was completed at the expense of the Russian benefactors.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić were invited guests at the gala ceremony.

Russian Foreign Minister has thanked everybody who took part in this holy work. He reminded that President of the Russian Federation watched this project personally.

President of Serbia thanked Russia for its invaluable help in creating the mosaic. “I am glad to talk to you at this significant day for the relations of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Serbia. This is the day of unveiling mosaic on the dome of St. Savva Cathedral,” Aleksandar Vučić said in Russian. He has also commented that the cathedral will become a symbol of friendship between Russia and Serbia.

Patriarch Irinej of Serbia has also expressed gratitude for the rendered help. His words were addressed to Russia, Vladimir Putin and Russian Orthodox Church.

Cathedral of Saint Savva is one of the main architectural monuments in Serbia and one of the largest Orthodox Cathedrals in the world. It was built at the place of burning the holy relics of St. Savva by Ottoman authorities in 1594. The cathedral was supposed to be finished at the end of the 19th century, however, it was delayed until 30s of the 20th century. Then the Second World War stopped its construction. The dome was completed in 1989. The cathedral was officially opened only in 2004, but the interior has been decorated until now.
