Thousands of people protest against closing Russian schools in Riga

Over 3 thousand people joined the protest meeting in Latvia, which took place on 24 of February in a park in Riga. Tatiana Zhdanok, the member of the movement protecting Russian schools and the deputy of European Parliament from Latvia, noted that this is a significant amount of people for the country, especially considering the cold weather.

She added that the date was chose for a purpose. On this very day 229 year ago Ekaterina II signed the order to create the first Russian school in Latvia.

The motto of the protesters was “Russian is the first language. Latish is the second one”. The main purpose of the meeting was to object to the government’s decision to ban education in the Russian language in Latvia.

They also asked people to sign the appeal to the European Committee, the UNESCO, the PACE and the UN.

Note that the Latvian Parliament had previously approved the law and then voted for the educational reform providing for the shift of all the schools to the Latish language. The majority of the deputies supported banning Russian schools.
