Baikal – Alaska expedition is crossing the Bering Strait at the moment, according to the Russian Embassy in the US Facebook account. Such a trip is performed by an inflatable ocean class catamaran for the first time in history of navigation. Having left the Provideniya District of Chukotka behind on July 24, the expedition is heading for the American village of Nom by the Searcher paddleboat.

The crew organized round the clock watches, as they do not make stops. “The Bering Strait is dangerous for sailors, we required a thorough preparation for taking the trip, studying maps, consulting the sailors," the expedition head Anatoly Kazakevich said.

The travellers are going to meet the local population in Nom, TASS reports.

The total length of the second stage of the Baikal – Alaska route which started on June 17 is 6000 km. It lies through Anadyr, Nom, Dutch Harbor and Anchorage. The Searcher crew overcame 7000 km from Irkutsk to Kamchatka last year.

The main goal of the enthusiasts is to find and show  to the world interesting and active people who are creating unusual business projects in the North of Russia and taking the creative initiatives. The crew is filming a documentary of their trip.

The catamaran itinerary can be followed online at the official website of the expedition, the diary of the expedition is constantly updated there.

As the Russkiy Mir Foundation reported earlier, last week Nom was visited by another Russian expedition of around the world flight started in Samara.
