Syria – Russkiy Mir – Artek

30.08.2018

Schoolchildren from Syria who arrived in Moscow on August 29 will go on excursion around the Russian capital. 25 children studying on their 9th year at school represent almost every corner of Syria - Damascus, Homs, Tartus, Aleppo, Deir Ez-Zor etc. Since the 7th grade they study Russian as a second foreign language. Those children won the school Olympiad of Russian language this year. The reward was a three-week trip to the Russian Artek Children's Camp.

The Russkiy Mir Foundation Executive Director Vladimir Kochin congratulated the children on this important event in their lives and wished them to have a good rest at the Artek International Children's Camp before the new school year, to make friends with their peers from Russia. He also assured that the Russian language would be useful when they grew up. "Thank you for studying Russian. I am sure Syria will overcome all difficulties and will again become a prosperous state. And you will become highly qualified professionals and will connect our countries," he said.

Russian language becomes more and more popular and required in Syria every year, said Dr. Raduan Al-Rahhal, the chief inspector on the Russian language of Syria's Ministry of Education who accompanies the group. He recalled that four years ago Russian officially became the second foreign language in the school curriculum. Today 15 thousand Syrian schoolchildren since the 7th grade study it. Four years ago the Russian language department was opened at the Damascus University.

The Russkiy Mir Foundation supports Syrian schoolchildren not for the first time giving them the opportunity to visit Russia. Last September grace to the efforts of the Foundation, the Russian Center in Damascus and a number of other organizations, children from Syria who won the school Olympiad on Russian visited Artek. In the camp they rested, studied, improved their Russian and penetrated into Russian traditions.
