ARCTIC OPEN International Film Festival starts in Arkhangelsk on December 6, TASS reports.  All films in the festival program are spread among three categories: feature, documentary and short film; the jury is to select one winner from each of them.

Pomeranian Cultural Foundation Bereginya organizes the festival for the second time with the support of the Arkhangelsk Region’s Ministry of Culture. ARCTIC OPEN also was one of the projects that won the presidential grant for development of civil society.

More than 50 films made it to the short list of the festival. Nine features from Russia, Denmark, the US and Iceland, 20 short films and 23 documentaries are going to compete in the contest.

According to the head of the festival Tamara Statikova, one of the differences between ARCTIC OPEN and other film festivals is the red carpet – in fact, it is not red but blue. The list of honored guests includes the president of the festival Igor Ugolnikov, Alexey Agranovich, who head the jury in the feature category, and other famous directors, actors and filmmakers from countries of the Arctic region.

Russkiy Mir reported an Icelandic adventure film Lost in the ice to open the festival. This feature will hit the Russian cinemas in the beginning of 2019. Tsar-Ptitsa by Eduard Novikov will finish the contest program.

Documentaries selected for the ARCTIC OPEN are very diverse and fall into several programs: films about those who work in the Arctic region, natural beauty of the region, Arctic explorers and expeditions.

Most of the films are going to have its premiere at the festival and will be shown throughout the region when the contest is over.
