Monument to Yuri Gagarin installed in Sri Lanka

A monument to Yuri Gagarin was installed in Sri Lanka, TASS reports. It is placed in the hall of State Library in country’s capital.

The opening ceremony of bronze monument took place on January 25. City officials lead by Mayor of Colombo Rosy Senanayake, parliamentarians, Russian Embassy officials and diplomats from other countries participated in the ceremony along with compatriots, members of public organizations, etc.

This is the second monument to Gagarin in Sri Lanka. The first one is located at the hotel, where the cosmonaut stopped during his visit to Ceylon in 1961. The participants noted that new monument will be available for greater number of people.

Dialogue of Cultures - United World International Charitable Fund donated the monument to the city. It works to popularize the feat of world’s first cosmonaut. According to President’s advisor Saman Weerasinghe, peoples of Sri Lanka is very thankful for this gift. He expressed confidence that the monument will become a motivation for young people, reminding them of the first spaceman’s feat.

As Russkiy Mir reported, Dialogue of Cultures - United World has already installed several monuments to Gagarin in 40 countries all over the world.
