Vyacheslav Nikonov: US to declare economic war by new anti-Russian sanctions

14.02.2019

Potential US sanctions against Russia's sovereign debt, announced by the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, will hit foreign investors first, Russian Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov stated. According to him, Russian authorities consider possible sanctions unpleasant, but they are ready for them, RIA Novosti quotes Siluanov.

The new package of sanctions that the USA may impose on Russia as a punishment for Moscow’s alleged interference in elections in other countries and the incident in Kerch Strait are divided into two groups, according to the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The subjects to sanctions are companies investing in Russian fuel projects outside the country, banks, cyber sector and public debt. In addition, restrictive measures will be taken against politicians and businessmen who the US considers to be involved in "illegal and corrupt activities in the interests of Vladimir Putin". The sanctions will also affect 24 FSB officers who participated in the suppression of illegal breakthrough of Ukrainian courts in Kerch Strait. In addition, the United States threatened to impose sanctions on Russian shipbuilding sector.

Both houses of Russian Parliament responded to the US statements. Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education and Science, Chairman of the Board of Russkiy Mir Foundation Vyacheslav Nikonov wrote on Facebook that the adoption of the sanctions package “would be a declaration of economic war,” which could be followed by Russia's response. “War is war; there will be victims. Washington should understand that they will be from the American side, and considerable ones,” Nikonov added.

Head of Foreign Affairs Committee of Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev called the forthcoming sanctions 'insane'. He wrote on Facebook that the aggressive actions of the United States are caused by the desire for "total hegemony", by which the Americans are trying to hide their defeats.
