Bolshoi Drama Theater (BDT) turned 100 on Friday, February 15, Izvestia newspaper reports. The first performance took place in the Petersburg theater on this day. Artists played Don Carlos tragedy. The team put off the festivities for two weeks, Chief Director Andrei Moguchiy explained. According to him, large-scale tours in the capital have just ended, and they demanded a full return from actors and the creating part of group. The Artistic Director explained that the anniversary evening would be organized to remind the public about different periods of the theater’s existence.

Much attention will be paid to individuals who influenced the history of the theater. They are poet Alexander Blok, who once headed the theater’s directorate, and Maxim Gorky. In spite of the fact that the theater was named after the famous writer for many years and he was considered its founder, Gorky was there only once.

Most of the evening will be dedicated to George Tovstonogov. He stood at the helm of the BDT for a third of its existence. It is no coincidence that the theater got his name. The glory of the Petersburg team is associated with this director. His History of the Horse and other plays are still remembered today. Innokenti Smoktunovsky played the main role in The Idiot play, and Volodin performed in the Five Evenings. The theater pays a lot of attention to contemporary directors and playwrights today. In particular, Ivan Vyrypaev puts on a performance based on his play. It is written specifically for Alisa Freindlich, one of the stars of the BDT.
