85 years since Yuri Gagarin’s birth

The anniversary of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was celebrated on Saturday, March 9th. This year marks 85 years since his birth.

Yuri Gagarin was born in 1934 in Smolensk region. He made his flight into space on April 12, 1961 and became the most famous person on the planet. He spent 108 minutes in space and made one turn around Earth. Since 1962, Cosmonautics Day is celebrated in Russia on April 12. A few years later, other countries joined the celebration of World Day for Aviation and Cosmonautics.

Ordinary people, heads of countries and great artists were dreaming about meeting with Yuri Gagarin, and his smile became a symbol of our country.

The first cosmonaut of the planet died in a plane crash on March 27, 1968. This happened in Vladimir region during a training flight. Until today, the circumstances and causes of the catastrophe have not been fully clarified.

Gagarin Readings are traditionally held in the homeland of the first conqueror of outer space by his birthday. This year more than 250 people will take part in them, including scientists, space workers, cosmonauts, designers, members of youth associations and many others. 

The Son of Russia Is A Citizen Of The World exhibition began its work in Kaluga at State Museum of History of Cosmonautics. Its organizers recalled that the city is inscribed in the history of cosmonautics, since the founder of space science Konstantin Tsiolkovsky lived and worked here.

The exhibition presents the astronaut's personal belongings, documents and photographs. 

Roscosmos launched the #Gagarin85 action. Its participants are offered to be photographed with the background of places associated with the name of the first cosmonaut, such as streets and squares, educational institutions, graffiti, posters. A picture with #Gagarin85 hashtag must be placed on Roscosmos VK page until March 13. A collage of photos will be sent to space as a souvenir for the crew of International Space Station.

Note, the memory of Yuri Gagarin is perpetuated throughout the world. The Dialogue of Cultures — One World Foundation has already installed several dozen busts of the first man who traveled to outer space. They are located in 40 different countries around the world. 

Children's art contest timed to coincide with the anniversary of Gagarin has been announced in South Ossetia. Roscosmos will send tourists to space on Gagarin’s route.
