Ukraine chose its new president on Sunday, April 21, RIA Novosti reports. Vladimir Zelensky is leading by a wide margin after counting 90.25% of the ballots in the second round of elections. 73.18% of Ukrainians voted for him. The current President Petro Poroshenko received 24.49% of votes. Mass violations that could have an impact on the election results have not been recorded.
This is the first case in the history of Ukraine, when citizens of the country give the President such credibility.
The CEC reported that final results will be announced by April 30.
The headquarters of Vladimir Zelensky have already promised that one of the priorities of his activities as President will be relations with Russia. The candidate considers that his first task is to return sailors arrested for violating Russian state borders back to Ukraine. He is also going to organize an “information war” to stop the armed conflict in Donbass.
Russian politicians, in turn, express hope that Zelensky’svictory in the elections could lead to a reset in relations between Kiev and Moscow. According to member of Federation Council Sergey Kalashnikov, new leadership can change the course. With the right policy line in Ukraine, both sides will benefit.
Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova also believes that such reboot is possible. But it must be based on the awareness of the need to consolidate people in order to work out a national agenda.
