Translators and scholars of Russian literature from Russia, the UK, France, Japan, India, Israel, Iraq and many other countries gathered at the Yasnaya Polyana Museum for the two-day 14th International seminar for translators of Leo Tolstoy and other Russian classics, Culture.rf reports.
The seminar program includes scientific reports, workshops, round tables on problems of translation theory and practice, the presentation of new editions of translations of Leo Tolstoy’s works in different languages and books about Tolstoy.
The seminar will end on September 12 with a demonstration of Galina Yevtushenko's documentary film called Pushkin’s Italy.
The first meeting was opened by Russian Evgeny Solonovich, who suggested that colleagues considered the translation a declaration of love to the author and approached the work accordingly. Several reports by Russian translators and researchers are devoted to criticizing the translation of works by Russian classics into different languages of the world.

A number of experts devoted their messages to the problem of translating folk speech in the works of Leo Tolstoy. Iraqi researcher Faleh Gadanhar has prepared a report on the relevance of Leo Tolstoy’s moral and religious worldview for residents of the Middle East, and Russian Natalya Shuiskaya will talk about the influence of the Russian classic on the culture of modern Arab countries.
