Learn Russian by playing: students from Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt compete in finals

19.09.2019

The connoisseurs on the Russian language from the federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt met on September 3 at Immanuel Kant School in Falkensee (Germany) in the competition for reaching the finals of the Learn Russian by Playing cup.

Eleven teams of schoolchildren came to the regional round of the federal cup. They made their way through the in-school qualifying rounds, where they excelled in their knowledge of the Russian language. A trip to the finals in the Europa-Park amusement park in Rust at the invitation of the main sponsor of the event, Gazprom Germany, is prepared for the winner.

The regional tour in Falkensee was the beginning of the active phase of the Russian language competition. There will be sixteen selections in the next eight weeks; they will be held in ten federal states and, in addition, one each in Austria and Switzerland.

This year alone, 4,200 students from 202 schools in three countries took part in the cup. Since 2007, this competition has attracted both schoolchildren studying Russian and their teachers.

The  Learn Russian by Playing Federal Cup is one of the longest-running projects of the German-Russian forum in bilateral relations.

Every year in April we commemorate the glorious day of April 12, 1961. It was the day when Yuri Gagarin, the first man of the new space era, was brought to near-earth orbit by the Vostok-1 spacecraft. The flight lasted just a little over an hour and a half, but it turned Gagarin into a figure that has been admired throughout the world ever since. The feat accomplished by Gagarin 60 years ago inspires us to recall the incredible connection of his story with Lolita Torres - a singer and one of the top actresses from Argentina's golden era of cinema.
In 2021, the Lake Baikal Ice Marathon was held on Baikal for the 17th time. The reporter of the Dutch newspaper de Volksrant decided to test himself and overcome 42 kilometers at -29 degrees Celsius and in a scorching wind. He was joined by other 60 athletes.
