Russia will certainly assist the Syrian authorities in organizing the teaching of the Russian language in schools, RIA Novosti reports. This was told by Sergey Melnikov, who holds the post of executive secretary of the Council for Cooperation with Religious Associations under the President of the Russian Federation.
Melnikov led the delegation of the inter-religious working group that traveled to Syria in late September with a humanitarian visit. The politician noted that the delegates had many meetings at different levels, including the question of learning the Russian language.
According to Melnikov, the Syrian authorities plan to introduce Russian into the school curriculum as a second foreign language, and the topic was discussed with the head of the Ministry of Education of Russia Olga Vasilyeva.
Melnikov noted that the Ministry of Education would receive a request for assistance, which may be the training of methodologists. He also noted that the assistance with food was no longer relevant and less in demand for the country. There is a need for serious infrastructure projects, including in the educational sphere.
Russkiy Mir reported that the number of Syrian schoolchildren who were studying the Russian language in the last academic year exceeded eighteen thousand. This is more than seven times higher than in the 2014/2015 school year.
