First monument to Mikhail Gorbachev opened in Germany

The first monument in Germany to the first President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev was erected in Dessau-Roslau. The opening of the monument was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the unification of Germany. The ceremony was attended by Russian diplomats and the leadership of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, to which the city belongs, TASS reports.

Chief Burgomaster of Dessau-Roslau Peter Kuras noted Gorbachev's contribution to German unity, which, thanks to the activities of the Soviet leadership, was achieved peacefully. The famous German sculptor Bernd Goebel captured Mikhail Gorbachev walking. The money for the monument, erected next to the city hall, was collected by locals. The monument cost 50,000 euros.

At the opening ceremony, it was emphasized that the monument to Mikhail Gorbachev was the first in Germany, earlier a bust was installed to the first president of the USSR. Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt Rainer Haseloff stated that Russia and Germany, despite differences on some issues, managed to maintain friendship. The opening was attended by employees of the Russian embassy in Germany.
