The Japanese, who used to live in the Kuril Islands, will be able to see the burial places of their ancestors, TASS reports. From Wednesday, October 21, special flights will be organized for them. The Hokkaido authorities are planning that the planes will not land, they will also not enter the Russian zone.
A total of five charter flights are expected to take place. Each time up to 20 people will be boarded. Among them there will be both former residents of the Kuriles and their descendants.
At the end of the summer, Tokyo decided to abandon visa-free exchanges between Japanese prefectures and the southern part of the Kuril Islands due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The Association of Former Japanese Residents of the Kuril Islands stressed that it was impossible to guarantee that there was no risk of infection while traveling. The head of the public organization Hideaki Miyakawa expressed regret over this. Hopefully, he added, travels would resume next year.
