Journalists celebrate Russian Press Day

Day of the Russian press is celebrated on Wednesday, January 13, the Parlamentskaya Gazeta newspaper writes. It was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the publication of the first Russian newspaper.
On this day, 318 years ago, the first issue of the publication founded by Peter the Great was published. “Vedomosti on military and other matters worthy of knowledge and memory that happened in the Moscow state and in other neighboring countries” was published on January 13, 1703. Subsequently, the newspaper was published under various names until the October Revolution.
During Soviet times, journalists and other emploees of periodicals celebrated their professional holiday on May 5. On this day in 1912, the Pravda newspaper was published for the first time.
By tradition, a solemn ceremony of awarding the laureates with the government prize in the media is timed to coincide with the professional holiday of journalists. Ten winners will receive a million rubles each. The awards will be presented by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. This year there will be three personal and seven collective awards.
Among the laureates are Lev Elin, the head of the "Lev" publishing house , the head of ANO "TV-Novosti" Margarita Simonyan, the editor of the department of culture "Arguments and Facts" Yulia Petukhova and others.
