The history of the discoveries of Russian scientists in Oceania, as well as Russian names that were given in this part of the world in past centuries and in our time, became the main topics of the international scientific and practical conference timed to the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Papua New Guinea. Scientists from Russia and Australia took part in the event, which took place in St. Petersburg, according to the website of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg.

Speakers from universities and research centers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Canberra devoted their reports to the significance of Russian discoveries and their preservation. They also noted the need to systematize the work on the restoration of Russian place names on world maps of the world. The compilation of an atlas of the world using Russian names of geographical objects was discussed.

Scientists noted that Russian names were given to settlements and geographical objects not only in the past centuries. About four years ago, one of the villages in Papua New Guinea was named in honor of the explorer Nikolai Miklukho-Maclay at the request of the villagers, who honor the memory of the Russian scientist.

The participants noted the importance of the conference, which brought together researchers of different scientific profiles.
