The European Union is weighing up the possibility of procuring the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, Reuters reports, citing diplomatic and official sources.

According to an EU official who negotiates with vaccine makers, EU governments are considering launching talks with Sputnik V developers. Four EU states should make requests to start the process, the official noted. However, no decision has been made so far.

Hungary and Slovakia have already received first batches of Sputnik V, while the Czech Republic has expressed its interest in the vaccine. Last week, Russia  signed a deal to produce Sputnik V in Italy. It is planned to produce 10 million doses, the production is set to start in July.

Sputnik V is currently under the reviewing proccess with the European Medicines Agency.

To date, Sputnik V has been registered in fifty countries, the total population of which reaches almost one and a half billion people.
