Russians named Yesenin, Pushkin and Akhmatova favorite poets

The most popular poets among the inhabitants of Russia are Sergei Yesenin, Alexander Pushkin and Anna Akhmatova. The poetic priorities of Russians were revealed by a survey of the MyBook book service. The study participants included Vera Polozkova, Alexander Kushner and other authors among their favorite contemporary poets, RIA Novosti reports.

The poll showed that most of all Russians love the poetry of Sergei Yesenin, more than half of the respondents called him their favorite. Alexander Pushkin took the second place with a small margin, Anna Akhmatova was included among the favorite poets by 42% of the respondents. William Shakespeare became the only foreign author to be among the five most revered poets among Russians.

The respondents also highly appreciated the work of Marina Tsvetaeva, Mikhail Lermontov, Joseph Brodsky, Vladimir Mayakovsky and other poets. More than 80% of the study participants admitted to an interest in poetry. The poll also showed that more than 70% of Russians have favorite poems.

The statistics of sales and downloads by the Liters reading service showed that the most popular work of world literature in Russian is Pushkin's novel in verse Eugene Onegin. Over the past year, it has been downloaded more than 80.000 times on this site. The top-3 also included "A Letter to a Woman" by Sergei Yesenin and "The Wisest Proverbs and Aphorisms of Omar Khayyam."
