The agreement on good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation concluded between Moscow and Beijing in 2001 will be automatically extended for the next five years, RIA Novosti reports. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced this during negotiations with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

The document was signed 20 years ago by the heads of two states, Vladimir Putin and Jiang Zeming.

Wang Yi called this agreement a solid legal foundation on which relations between the two countries are built. It contributes to the optimization and modernization of bilateral relations, the politician said. There is no doubt that the agreement opens the way for the conclusion of new agreements and will become an additional incentive for expanding relations.

According to Wang Yi, over time, the document will need to be filled with new content so that it meets the modern conditions of bilateral relations.

The head of the Chinese foreign ministry also recalled that lately accusations against China and Russia have been increasingly heard from Europe. Nevertheless, the West understands that attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the two countries under fictitious pretexts are a thing of the past.

In turn, Sergei Lavrov noted that Moscow and Beijing should mobilize like-minded people in upholding the principles of international law and the UN Charter, which the West ignores.

The situation in the international arena is becoming more and more complicated, the Western partners want to preserve their dominance at all costs. For this they are trying to close their eyes to the objective historical order, to the course of history, in accordance with which a multipolar world order is being formed.

Sergei Lavrov expressed confidence that in the negotiations with Beijing the parties will take "one more step in the development of our strategic interaction and multifaceted partnership."
