A vaccine against coronavirus infection for animals has appeared in Russia, RIA Novosti reports. The Rosselkhoznadzor named the drug the only one in the world.

According to the deputy head of the department, Konstantin Savenkov, Karnivak-Kov was created by specialists from the Federal Center for Animal Health. Scientists began clinical studies last fall. The drug was tested on dogs, foxes, cats, arctic foxes and other animals.

The tests showed that the vaccine is safe. It also has high immunogenic activity, because all vaccinated received antibodies to coronavirus.

Research work has not yet been completed, scientists must study how long immunity appears after vaccination.  The drug may be launched into mass production next month.

Rosselkhoznadzor has no doubts that the development of a vaccine for animals is very important, since some species are very susceptible to COVID-19. In Russia, two cases of cats infected with COVID-19 have been recorded - in Moscow and Tyumen. Experts believe that the use of the vaccine for animals can prevent the development of mutations in the virus, which occur most often during interspecies transmission of the pathogen. Also, a representative of the department recalled that science has not found evidence that the coronavirus is transmitted from animal to people.
