Scientists from leading Russian universities, including Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, HSE University and others, were awarded the Research Excellence Award Russia 2021. Within the framework of the award, prizes are given for the largest number of scientific publications and citation in international publications, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper reports.

The award is timed to coincide with the Year of Science and Technology in Russia; it was organized with the participation of the Russian Union of Rectors. When identifying the winners, not only the number of publications and citations were taken into account, but also the experts' assessment. Similar ratings and ceremonies are also held in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

MSU Rector Viktor Sadovnichy highly appreciated the contribution of modern Russian scientists to science and emphasized the importance of scientific work carried out by the country's universities. Sadovnichy called the work of university scientists the core of national science.

HSE Vice-Rector Leonid Gokhberg emphasized that the award recognizes scientists whose research has reached an international level, and expressed the hope that the award will stimulate further discoveries for the laureates.
