The largest memorial to Soviet soldiers in Europe, which is located in the Polish city of Braniewo, honored the memory of the soldiers who died during the liberation of Poland, TASS reports. The ceremony was attended by the head of the Russian embassy, the general consul of the Russian Federation, the management of the Rossotrudnichestvo office in Poland.

Traditionally, the commemorative action is held by the authorities of the Kaliningrad region. Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, who live in Kaliningrad, come to bow to their fellow soldiers and brothers in arms, who laid down their heads a few months before the end of the war. Relatives and bikers accompany the veterans on the way and to the cemetery. This tradition began more than ten years ago, and had to be interrupted last year due to restrictions aimed at countering the spread of coronavirus infection. Unfortunately, the regional administration noted, it was not possible to carry it out in 2021.

The government of the Kaliningrad region expressed gratitude to colleagues from the embassy, consulate and representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo for continuing this important tradition even in such difficult conditions.

More than 30,000 Soviet soldiers are buried in the cemetery. Unfortunately, most of the graves still remain unnamed. The search teams continue to work to establish the identities of those who died in the battles in this territory. A large military grave appeared on the outskirts of the German city of Braunsberg (now the Polish Braniewo) during the war - in February 1945. Later, the remains of the dead Red Army soldiers from the surrounding mass and single graves were transferred here. At the end of the sixties, a monument to the soldiers-liberators was erected at the cemetery.
