Holy Week began on April 26 for Orthodox believers, Interfax reports. On the week of the strictest fasting before Easter, they remember the last days of the life of Jesus Christ, his crucifixion and burial.

For all believers, Holy Week is a period of abstinence and attendance at services, as well as preparation for Easter, it is considered especially important.

Every day of this week is called “great” because of the significance of events according to the Gospel, such as the Last Supper and the crucifixion of Christ. Great Saturday is associated with the burial of Christ. But in the process of divine services, the priests change their black mourning robe for light garments, preparing for the great holiday of Easter. Holy Week ends after Saturday - at midnight, when Orthodox believers greet each other with joyful exclamations of "Christ is Risen!", Announcing the onset of the main Christian holiday.

This year, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter, or the Resurrection of Christ on Sunday, May 2.
