23.04.2021

An exhibition of works by military photojournalist Yevgeny Khaldei has opened in Germany, TASS reports. The ceremony took place the day before, on April 22, and was held online. The exposition entitled "War and Peace - Photos by Yevgeny Khaldei" is located in the Nuremberg Trials memorial complex in southern Germany.

Evgeny Khaldei is a legend of Soviet and world photography. His pictures, taken at the epicenter of the events of World War II, are printed in history books and published on posters ever since. Photos of Yevgeny Khaldei were used as evidence of the atrocities of the Nazis at the Nuremberg trials. Khaldei walked with his camera a long military road from Murmansk to Berlin. He is the author of the legendary photograph "Banner of Victory over the Reichstag".

Among the exhibits there are 30 works of the photographer. Also, the exposition is complemented by photographs of the military commander Nikolai Petrov. They depict the destruction of Nuremberg, they were provided by the Russian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents.

The exhibition was organized within the framework of cooperation between Nuremberg and the Russian Embassy in Germany with the assistance of the daughter of the photographer Anna Khaldei and the support of LOYS Law Office.

Russian Ambassador Sergei Nechaev is confident that this exhibition is aimed at preserving historical memory, it will help protect the culture of preserving memory. The senior diplomat has no doubt that today, when attempts to question memory and rewrite history have become a system, this is especially important.
