800th anniversary of Alexander Nevsky celebrated in Russia

The anniversary of Alexander Nevsky is celebrated on Thursday, May 13, RIA Novosti reports. 800 years have passed since the birth of the famous commander, statesman, canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, the Grand Duke of Kiev and Vladimir.

According to the research carried out by Russian historians, the 2nd son of the Pereyaslavl prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, the grandson of prince Vsevolod the Big Nest, was born on May 13, 1221 in Pereyaslavl. Now the city is called Pereslavl-Zalessky.

The prince led the Russian squad in the battle with the Teutonic knights on Lake Peipsi. The legendary Battle on the Ice took place in 1242. And two years earlier, when he won the battle that took place at the mouth of the Izhora river, the prince was nicknamed Nevsky, and the battle was later called the Nevskiy battle. These military victories made it possible to stop the offensive of the western neighbors on the Russian lands.

Alexander Nevsky died on November 14, 1263 on the way to Vladimir, shortly before his death, the prince took monastic vows to the highest degree of monasticism - schema with the name Alexy.

The anniversary of Alexander Nevsky is celebrated at the state level. The events will cover 8 regions, with St. Petersburg taking the central part. A large-scale conference "The Image of Alexander Nevsky in the Heroic History of Russia" is going to take place there. There will also be a congress dedicated to ancient Russian culture. A scientific and educational project "Holy Blessed Alexander Nevsky in the spiritual and artistic life of Russia", theater and concert programs of sacred music, a competition of works by young artists will be organized there. Many events on various topics will be held in the largest Russian libraries.

One of the largest events will be the opening of the Battle of the Ice Museum and the installation of a monument to Alexander Nevsky. The creation of a full-length animated film "Alexander Nevsky" has been announced, which will be created with public funds. A feature film about the commander will also be shot.

Three days later, the International Educational Readings "Alexander Nevsky: West and East, Historical Memory of the People" will start. They will be headed by Patriarch Kirill. Earlier, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church declared 2021 the Year of Alexander Nevsky.
