Muslims in Russia on Tuesday, July 20, celebrate one of the most important Muslim holidays - Eid al-Adha, RIA Novosti reports. Muslims sacrifice an animal in memory of how the prophet Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail to the Almighty. The holiday also marks the end of the Hajj - a pilgrimage to the main Muslim shrines.

This year, the holiday traditions had to be changed due to the unfavorable epidemiological situation. The festive prayer took place only in the Cathedral Mosque without the presence of parishioners in Moscow. The same decision was made in some other regions.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Zul Hijjah according to the Islamic lunar calendar. The holiday lasts for three days.
