For the first time in almost 20 years, Russian athletes won Olympic medals in rowing, TASS reports. Elena Oryabinskaya and Vasilisa Stepanova stopped one step away from victory, becoming silver medalists in the two-oars without coxswain races. They lost less than 1,5 minutes to athletes from New Zealand. The top three were closed by Canadian athletes.
This victory is called a historic one. The men's four brought medals to Russia in 2004.
Elena Oryabinskaya and Vasilisa Stepanova were congratulated by the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matitsyn. According to him, they have refuted all predictions and achieved great success.
