The Californian court overruled the decision to close the frescoes of a native of the Russian Empire, artist Viktor Arnautov, on the walls of the George Washington Church, for viewers. The judge ruled on the illegality of the closure and destruction of the frescoes, and also stated the importance of preserving the cultural heritage, TASS reports.

Arnautov's 13 murals were painted over by the San Francisco Education Committee two years ago. Municipal officials saw scenes in the artist's drawings that could offend Indians and African Americans. Thanks to public outcry, the decision was revised and the murals were ordered to be closed for viewing.

The court ruled that the decision was illegal, citing the State's Environmental Conservation Act. Judge Ann Christine Masullo declared the importance of preserving the historical heritage and ruled to stop any actions related to the destruction or closure of Viktor Arnautov's frescoes.
