Karelian petroglyphs are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, TASS reports. Petroglyphs - rock paintings of the Neolithic era - are unique examples of primitive monumental art.

The head of the republic, Artur Parfenchikov, thanked everyone who participated in the preparation of this project.

Russia presented ancient rock paintings for consideration at UNESCO last year.

One group of petroglyphs was discovered on the coast of the White Sea almost 100 years ago. It was named the "Demon Tracks". It includes about 500 images. Later, several hundred more petroglyphs were discovered nearby. Another group of petroglyphs is located on the eastern shore of Lake Onega. It combines more than 1,200 images.
