The first Orthodox chapel in Latin America has been built in Campina das Missoes (Brazil), TASS reports. The temple was consecrated in honor of Christian theologians and missionaries Cyril and Methodius.

Voronezh architect Nadezhda Kirgeeva created the project of the chapel.

The opening ceremony took place last weekend with the participation of the representatives of local authorities, public figures, clergymen and Russian diplomats.

Last summer, the regional authorities called Campina das Missoes the cradle of Russian culture, since the first Russians settled there in 1909. It is planned to organize a tourist route entitled "The Way of Faith", in the town. In addition to the new chapel, the route will include an Orthodox church, a Russian cemetery and a Catholic church.

The author of the book on Russian immigration to Brazil, Jacinto Zabolotsky, said that the chapel was erected thanks to the donations from the parishioners of the local Orthodox church and with the assistance of the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church in Brazil. The foundation of the chapel is made of bricks produced at the factory, which belongs to the descendants of the first settlers.

Two years ago, the 110th anniversary of the arrival of Russian settlers was celebrated in Campina das Missoes. The consecration of the memorial arch at the entrance to the Russian cemetery was included in the program.

According to the Dean of the Brazilian District, Archpriest Anatoly Topala, throughout all these years, the descendants of the settlers have preserved their faith, culture and history.
