Russian illustrators win award at international competition in Bratislava

One of the five Golden Apples Awards of The Biennial of Illustration Bratislava went the sisters-artists from Russia Anna and Varvara Kendel. The jury of the competition chose the images of the Russian North, created by the sisters for the design of Anna Ignatova's book ''To the North. Traveling after the seagull," the  Year of Literature website reports.

About 380 artists from 42 countries took part in the competition. The Biennial of Illustration Bratislava it is one of the more prestigious children's book awards today is held under the patronage of UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture of Slovakia and other departments.

The Kendel sisters were born in the Chelyabinsk region; they received their education in St. Petersburg. In recent years, the artists have won a number of international prizes for a series of works of art dedicated to Karelia, Lake Baikal and other sights and regions of Russia, including the grand prix of the Beijing Book Fair BIBF ANANAS.

Anna and Varvara create many of their series from life during their hikes in Russia. They make drawings with watercolors and pencils, and then process them on a computer.
