Russian and Italian scientists recieve Mendeleev Prize

The awarding ceremony of the UNESCO-Russia Dmitri Mendeleev Prize took place the day before, on November 15, TASS reports. The award is named after the renowned scientist Dmitry Mendeleev, it was presented for the first time.

Russian physicist Yuri Oganesyan and Italian chemist Vincenzo Balzani became the laureates of the award. They arrived in Paris and were awarded in the hall filled with scientists and diplomats from different countries.

The laureates thanked the audience and gave a short lecture on their achievements.

UNESCO's Director-General Audrey Azoulay thanked Russia for its support in establishing the award. She also thanked the laureates for their research and efforts in spreading the scientific knowledge. 

As Russkiy Mir reported, Yuri Oganesyan was awarded the prize for discoveries that "expanded the boundaries of the periodic table" and a significant contribution to the development of fundamental sciences. He is a recognized expert in the field of experimental physics of the atomic nucleus. His research on the properties of new elements from the Mendeleev table gained him respect and acknowledgement from the international community.

The establishment of the prize became an important result of the Year of the Periodic Table of Mendeleev. It celebrates the achievements of researchers in the field of fundamental sciences. Two laureates receive the cash prize of $250,000.
