Sputnik becomes the word of 2021 in Russia

''Sputnik'' has become the word of the year in Russia, TASS reports. The research is traditionally carried out by the Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language.

According to Vice-Rector Mikhail Osadchy, who heads the Word of the Year project, this year the use of the word has grown nine times. The name of the first COVID-19 was used more often, in particular, due to the broad discussion of vaccination issues, and the vaccine recognition of the in other countries.

The Word of the Year is determined every year, the texts of Russian-language media and publications on the Internet are studied within the research. First, scientists identify the topics that have become the subject of the most heated discussions. Then the texts are studied by experts, who choose keywords. Then they make a list, distributing words by frequency of use.

The 2nd place was taken by the word "Afghanistan". It was used six times more often than before.  The discussion of recent events in this country sparked the explosive growth in the use of the word. 

The 3rd place went to "Nord Stream", its frequency has increased fivefold. It is closely followed by "census." The frequency of the word has increased more than 4,5 times, since the All-Russian Population Census started in October.

The top five was closed by the word "impeachment." The use of the words "QR code" and "anti-vaxxer" has increased.
