The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) has unclassfied documents proving that Japan was preparing for an attack on the Soviet Union in the 1940s, RIA Novosti reports. The archive of the documents is called "The Secret of the Japanese "Barbarossa. ""

Among the testimonies made public are the interrogation protocols of six Japanese military high ranks, who spoke in detail about Tokyo's preparations for a war against the USSR. High-ranking Japanese military personnel were arrested by Smersh officers (Soviet counter-intelligence agency.)

According to the testimonies, Japan had been hatching plans to attack the Soviet Union for many years. In particular, back in the 1930s, representatives of the Japanese armed forces and diplomats tried to involve former White Army officers in cooperation for intelligence and sabotage against the USSR.

In 1941, the preparation was intensified after the agreement with Nazi Germany. As a result, an attack plan was developed by the General Staff of Japan. It included the organization of large-scale terrorist and sabotage operations against the Soviet army, including the use of bacteriological weapons.
