Russia's Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology (EIMB) has developed a highly effective drug for the treatment of coronavirus infection, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Alexander Makarov, who heads the institute, the drug is based on monoclonal antibodies. It is effective against various strains, including the "delta" and "gamma" variants.

A year ago, EIMB created one of the first COVID-19 test systems. The system has been of great assistance in finding donors for blood transfusion. This system was used to work on the drug.

Laboratory tests have proved that the drug is highly effective. Makarov added that the scientists selected a dose of antibodies that reduced the viral load by 100,000 times. This is comparable to the results of the American antibody coctail Regeneron, Makarov said.

Monoclonal antibodies are produced by immune cells derived from a single plasma progenitor cell. They can be obtained for almost any natural antigen and used later for its detection or purification.
